The Old Port of Montreal offers a 2.5-kilometre window on the river. It runs along one of the most remarkable "waterfronts" in America – De la Commune Street – in Montreal’s historic district.

The Port of Montreal and the Old Port – Not to be confused!

It was here that the city and the port came to life more than 350 years ago. The Old Port – not to be confused with the Port of Montreal, where more than 24 million tonnes of cargo are handled annually – is an extraordinary site that receives more than seven million visitors and tourists every year.

The Old Port of Montreal Corporation, a crown corporation governed by Canada Lands Company Limited, is entrusted with the mission of managing, developing and operating this touristic and cultural site that is a venue for recreation and discovery. For more information about the Quays of the Old Port and its activities, click on the following link: www.quaysoftheoldport.com.

The port is governed by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), an autonomous federal agency whose mission is to provide highly-efficient facilities and services for its clients while respecting the environment.

The MPA is also responsible for promoting the competitive advantages of the Port of Montreal, which is open year-round. Its clientele consists of shipping lines, road and rail carriers, stevedoring companies, freight forwarders, exporters and importers.

A leader on the North Atlantic container market, the Port of Montreal also handles non-containerized general cargo and a wide assortment of dry and liquid bulk. Most of the port’s facilities, including its container terminals, are located in east-end Montreal, downstream from the Old Port. The port also boasts a multipurpose complex – the Bickerdike Pier and Bickerdike Container Terminal – located in the area upstream from the Old Port and Cité du Havre.

In the Old Port, the MPA operates the Iberville Passenger Terminal, which every year receives thousands of tourists travelling on floating hotels. Montreal is one of the main attractions for cruises along the St. Lawrence River and the North American East Coast.
